Prepare for Flu Season

The end of summer can mean a few things - back to routine, change of leaves and…flu season. In Canada, flu season runs from November to April and approximately 10-25% of us will catch the flu this year.
Since the best way to beat the flu is to understand it, here’s a quick overview:
What exactly is the flu?
Human influenza is a common respiratory infection that is caused by the influenza virus. Different strains circulate yearly and take hold when our immune system isn’t at its best. This can happen for a number of reasons, including fatigue, nutritional deficiencies and stress.
What does it look like?
Usually starts with body aches and chills and followed by fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, running nose, sneezing, watery eyes and sore throat. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can also occur, especially in children.
The bad and the ugly
Although most people recover completely within 7 – 10 days, an estimated 4,000 – 8,000 Canadians die every year from pneumonia related to the flu. Young children, seniors and those with preexisting health conditions are at higher risk.
